The Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) is organising the II Virtual Workshop: “Strategies for the integration of migrant women and girls: employment and youth” for 21 October 2025. This meeting is being held in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM); UN Women; the Inter-American Conference on Social Security (CISS); the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Regional Network of Civil Society Organisations for Migration (RROCM).

The workshop aims to analyse the challenges and opportunities faced by migrant women and girls in their socio-economic integration process, with an emphasis on access to formal employment, education and vocational training. The activity will seek to promote regional dialogue for the development of public policies based on a human rights, gender and intersectionality approach, in order to overcome structural barriers that limit their autonomy.

The II Virtual Workshop: “Strategies for the integration of migrant women and girls: employment and youth” will take place virtually and free of charge on Tuesday, 21 October, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Venezuela time). This second edition continues the efforts begun in 2024. According to reports from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), women and girls represent 48.1% of the international migrant population. Likewise, data from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) indicate that the youth unemployment rate in the region is three times that of adults, and that nearly 60% of young people in employment are in informal work, which limits their access to social security.

In this regard, the event will be enriched by the experiences and lessons learned from the first edition, updating the “Manual on best practices for the integration of migrant women and girls” launched in 2024 with the contributions made in this new cycle, incorporating new strategies focused on employment, entrepreneurship and vocational training for migrant women.

The initiative is part of SELA’s Work Programme for 2022-2026, within its Social Development area, and is part of a strategic vision that seeks tangible results and regional impact through the promotion of inclusive, safe and orderly migration governance, multisectoral cooperation, the generation of relevant technical knowledge and the implementation of public policies aligned with the emerging challenges of the region.
