During his participation at the XLIX Regular Meeting of the Latin American Council of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), the Secretary General of the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), Sergio Abreu, ratified his commitment with SELA to promote regional trade integration.
“Without trade there is no work, without work there is no social peace, and without social peace there are neither freedoms nor human rights, if we do not manage to integrate more and trade more with each other, we will not have results and this is the responsibility of the political will of all of us (...) the political will of our countries must be projected in the medium term, because that is where integration, trade and social justice come from,” the Secretary General of ALADI said.
Sergio Abreu stressed the need to work together “to make integration a reality.”
The XLIX Regular Meeting of the Latin American Council was held at the headquarters of the organisation, in Caracas, with the virtual and face-to-face participation of all its Member States.
The Latin American Council is the highest decision-making body of SELA and is made up of one representative of each Member State. Its attributions include considering, evaluating and approving: the work programme for the following year; the annual report submitted by the Permanent Secretariat; the budget and financial status of the mechanism, as well as examining the activities of the Permanent Secretariat and the Action Committees
In its 48 years of uninterrupted work, SELA has become a regional organisation of reference, conducting consultation and coordination, cooperation and joint economic and social promotion tasks, of a permanent nature, with international legal personality, before countries, groups of nations, forums and international organisations.
