SELA to hold VI Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of Logistic Port Communities

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) is convening the VI Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of Logistic Port Communities from 16 to 18 March this year in Panama City (in hybrid modality), with the aim of consolidating the logistic port communities in the region.

In this regional event, participants will assess the development of port activities in Latin America and the Caribbean in the context of the pandemic and present the progress and initiatives implemented in terms of port sustainability, as well as the prospects for the sector in the next few years. In addition, the main challenges of security and cybersecurity of ports, both at the level of operations and infrastructure, as well as the safeguarding and protection of information and data will be presented.

The Latin American and Caribbean Network of Digital and Collaborative Ports comprises public, private and regional institutions, namely ministries of transport, national institutes, established port communities, port authorities, maritime authorities, professional associations, universities and enterprises linked to the maritime-port sector.

The VI Meeting of Logistic Port Communities is part of SELA’s Work Programme for 2022-2026, particularly the programmes for economic integration and trade facilitation. The objective is to promote regional integration and open a space for a permanent and proactive debate on logistic port communities in regulatory, technical, technological, commercial and governance matters. It is also proposed to build a common agenda among integration blocs for the design of economic policies that contribute to the growth of the region.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a severe economic impact and generated a reduction in exports by 9.2% in 2020. In this regard, SELA is committed to making progress in initiatives to facilitate trade, within the framework of public policies to reduce costs and barriers to trade, open new markets and position Latin American and Caribbean trade in international markets.

Hence the importance of creating a space, from 16 to 18 March, to review the development of port activities in order to boost their growth and define a roadmap for the Network’s work plan for the coming years.
