The Webinar will discuss the main consequences of the current economic crisis in a context that can be compared to the crisis experienced by Latin America in the 1980s.
On Thursday 27 August at 10:00 am in Caracas, the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) will conduct the Webinar “A new lost decade for Latin America and the Caribbean? Regional challenges.” The virtual seminar will feature the participation of experts such as Adriana Arreaza Coll, Director of Macroeconomic Studies of CAF-development bank of Latin America, and Juan Blyde, Leading Economist of the Integration and Trade Sector of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
According to estimates made by multilateral organizations, in 2020, the region faces a drop in activity of about 9.4 percent and 15 percent of formal jobs will be lost, which has already set off alarms about a “new lost decade” comprising the period 2015-2025.
Unlike the debt crisis of the 1980s in the continent, the current COVID-19 emergency is of a global nature. As a result, the world economy is undergoing changes that demand a process of reflection by Latin American and Caribbean countries so that they can rethink their role as global players and take advantage of the opportunities that may arise in the dynamics of international trade.
The event will be led by Ambassador Javier Paulinich, Permanent Secretary of SELA, and the moderator will be Sebastián Nieto, Head of the Unit for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Development Centre of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The activity will address the main guidelines that a structural reform agenda should contain with a view to post-pandemic recovery, emphasizing the challenges to achieve a greater insertion into global value chains and deepen regional integration.
