The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), together with the Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE) of Brazil, held the VIII Annual Meeting of the Working Group on Trade and Competition of Latin America and the Caribbean (WGTC), in Brasilia, Brazil, on 10 and 11 October 2018. SELA organized the Seminar on impact evaluation of public policies for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Latin American Centre for Development Administration (CLAD), the Ibero-American School of Administration and Public Policies (EIAPP), CAF-development bank of Latin America, the World Bank (WB), the Centre for Research and Teaching on Economics (CIDE), the Regional Centre for Learning on Evaluation and Results for Latin America and the Caribbean (CLEAR-LAC) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Panama. This Seminar enabled officials of the institutions responsible for SMEs in Latin America and the Caribbean to obtain the technical skills required for the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies for MSMEs, as well as to disseminate recent initiatives that the governments of the region are implementing to promote these enterprises. It also allowed to consolidate technical cooperation among these focal points, in order to contribute to greater efficiency in the implementation of these policies.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), jointly with CAF-development bank of Latin America and the National Port Authority of the Republic of Peru, is organizing the “III Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of Logistic Port Communities”, to be held in Lima, Peru, on 16 and 17 August 2018.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), in collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), CAF-development bak of Latin America and the Direction of Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia, will conduct the “Subregional Workshop to validate the results of the Public Policy Index for MSMEs in Latin America and the Caribbean (IPPALC): Pacific Alliance, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay” in Bogotá Colombia, on 16 and 17 July 2018. Within the framework of the Fourth International Seminar "Latin America and the Caribbean and China: Conditions and Challenges in the XXI Century", organized by the academic network RED ALC-China and CAF-development bank of Latin America, the Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) designed a panel of experts on the internationalization of Latin American and Caribbean SMEs in the context of relations between Latin America and the Caribbean and the People's Republic of China. This panel will address the following topics: Analysis of the main characteristics of Latin American and Chinese SMEs in terms of their competitiveness and structure. The Government’s role in the promotion of exports and the productive linkage of SMEs. Successful practices of the region’s SMEs in the Chinese market. Latent opportunities in LAC-China cooperation.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) and the Secretariat General of the Andean Community (CAN) organized the Regional Meeting on Migration and Migration Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Lima, Peru, on 22 March 2018. This meeting aimed to discuss some of the factors determining migration flows and their impact on the labour market in Latin American and Caribbean countries. It was also intended to review, compare, and characterize updated information on migration flows in the region that may be useful to the institutions responsible for making decisions in this area.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) organized the “Seminar: Prospective vision of Latin American and Caribbean integration”, which was held in Mexico City, Mexico, on 6 and 7 March 2018. This event aimed to discuss the evolution of regional and subregional integration schemes that underscore the importance of strengthening integrationist ties among countries in the region. The contents of the Seminar included the following topics: Regional integration efforts; instruments for measuring regional integration; challenges of integration processes, and future prospects in Latin America.

SELA will hold the VI Meeting on Public-Private Partnerships for Disaster Risk Reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean: Business continuity and prevention plans for the tourism sector, together with the Ministry of the Presidency and Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic, and the Regional Office for the Americas of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). This meeting aims to analyze the main variables that contingency, prevention, business continuity and continuity of operations plans should contain to deal with the priorities and the essential and strategic issues of the tourism sector in the Member States of SELA, and exchange experiences and best practices on the development of contingency, business continuity and continuity of operations plans within institutions and companies in the tourism sector.

The sessions of the XLIII Regular Meeting of the Latin American Council of SELA will be held in Caracas, Venezuela, at the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat, in Av. Francisco de Miranda, Torre Europa, Fifth Floor, Simón Bolívar Conference Room, Campo Alegre. The Preparatory Stage will be held on 28 and 29 November and the Ministerial Stage will take place on 29 November after 15:00 and 30 November 2017. Final report
