As part of his official visit to Cuba, the Permanent Secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), Ambassador Lesly David, visited the Centre for World Economy Research (CIEM), where he was received by the Deputy Director General, Dr Jourdy James Heredia.
During the meeting, Dr James Heredia presented the main work conducted by CIEM, as well as the lines of research that currently guide the Centre’s work. The meeting highlighted the importance of a joint work agenda on regional integration, especially in view of the economic and geopolitical challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean.
Both authorities agreed on the need to promote dialogue among regional actors to facilitate coordinated decision-making in response to global changes affecting the region’s economic growth. In this regard, they evaluated the strategic role of trade relations with China and the European Union and emphasised that joint action among Latin American and Caribbean countries can generate incentives to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in key sectors such as technology, agribusiness and infrastructure.
The importance of strengthening human talent capacities in the region was also addressed, recognising the multiplier effect that specialised training has on the economic and social development of Latin American and Caribbean countries.
The visit reaffirms the commitment of SELA and CIEM to promoting inclusive policies that respond to contemporary challenges and promote sustainable and equitable development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
