The Permanent Secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), Ambassador Clarems Endara, congratulated Gustavo Petro, President-elect of Colombia, and reaffirmed SELA's commitment to support his efforts for more and better integration of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Gustavo Petro, candidate of the Historic Pact, won the presidency in the second round of elections, held on Sunday 19 June, in which he obtained 11,281,013 votes and 50.44%, compared to 47.31% for candidate Rodolfo Hernández, who received 10,580,412 votes.
The turnout reached 58.09 %, one of the highest in Colombia's presidential election history, according to data provided by the National Registry.
Since 1979, Colombia has been one of the 25 Member States of SELA and has participated in the joint work programme aimed at the economic recovery and development of the region.
