Virtual Seminar on digital transformation and the adoption of innovative technologies in the port sector
Information

Date 22 and 23 August 2024
INTRODUCTION

Today, technological adaptation is an imperative because the hyper-connected environment that characterises the world of business, maritime navigation, land transport or the storage and distribution of all types of cargo requires a high level of automation to facilitate the implementation of intelligent, safe, sustainable and autonomous systems that minimise or eliminate possible adverse conditions and guarantee the optimal functioning of operations and the effectiveness of international trade.

The maritime-port sector is facing an important process of digitalisation 4.0 or “fourth industrial revolution” that encompasses technologies such as the following: digitalisation of processes; the Internet of Things (IoT); big data and artificial intelligence (AI); cloud computing; edge computing; blockchain and Digital Twins, among others. It also includes elements such as mobility; cybersecurity; sustainability; traceability; flexibility and circular economy. This path of improving port and business processes is not always easy to follow due to the difficulties that both companies and states have in implementing emerging technologies. However, the growing degree of competition makes the adoption of such technologies imperative and urgent.

In recent years, a large number of companies and startups have emerged in the sector offering various digital solutions, technologies that have great transformative potential and can add significant value to the service they provide to their customers and partners, thus facilitating decision making processes. Digital transformation and the adoption of innovative technologies in ports not only improve efficiency and productivity, but also promote sustainability and competitiveness in global trade. This event is an opportunity to explore these technologies and discuss their impact on the port industry, thus fostering collaboration and innovation in the sector. Hence, SELA’s interest in organising this event within the framework of Project A. Information technologies and sustainable energy infrastructure for development, included in the Thematic Axis Digitalisation and Infrastructure of the Work Programme for 2022-2026 of the organisation.

OBJECTIVE

To present innovative initiatives designed and developed by companies, startups, port operators and technology centres to improve operational efficiency, port productivity, security, the use of renewable energies and interconnection among the different port stakeholders.
